![]() It's pretty heady stuff, especially when it delves into Vina's relationship with Pike - that itself is an illusion, but one she understands and accepts as enough for her. Vina, played by 'Grey's Anatomy' alum Melissa George, is revealed as being a projection of health and beauty - and that it feels as real as she needs it to feel. ![]() 'If Memory Serves' also blends in with the overarching story of this season, the idea of faith being based on what we can see and feel and understand, versus what we even know of reality. It's a fun little gag, but it serves as a way of tying up the messiness of 'Star Trek' and gives us a context for Pike's relationship with Talos IV. Why are we bringing this all up? Because 'If Memory Serves' opens with a mish-mash of scenes from 'The Cage' and 'The Menagerie', and then cuts right into Anson Mount - who's taken over from Jeffrey Archer in the '60s - as Captain Pike. Vina (Melissa George) speaks on behalf of the Talosians to Spock and Michael (Ethan Peck and Sonnequa Martin-Green) 'The Cage' was never considered part of the canon of 'Star Trek', and scenes from it were reused for a later episode in the original series called 'The Menagerie', where Spock - out of loyalty to his former captain, Christopher Pike - took him to Talos IV where he would be reunited with Vina, a human who had survived on Talos IV and was essentially their human emissary. Then, there's the Kelvin TImeline - which is where the rebooted movies with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and JJ Abrams are involved and this made up 'Star Trek Into Darkness' and 'Star Trek Beyond'.īut at the very start of the series, there was a pilot episode called 'The Cage' - which saw the original captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike, set down on a planet called Talos IV where giant-headed aliens were able to project illusions into people's minds. This includes 'Star Trek: The Original Series', 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' and then 'Star Trek: Voyager'. There's the Prime Timeline - which is what the TV series are based upon. ![]() Tyler, meanwhile, is still drawn to Burnham and the Federation, said Shazad Latif, who plays Tyler. As far as timelines and parallel universes go, 'Star Trek' is a slightly messy one. Tyler is L'Rell's "torchbearer," as Chieffo puts it.Įxpect an exploration of the fairly messed up dynamic between the two, with L'Rell having orchestrated Voq's surgical transformation and brainwashing into Ash Tyler. Ash TylerĪlongside L'Rell is Ash Tyler, who at the end of the first season chose to leave Starfleet to go with the Klingons. "There's an interesting juxtaposition of internal and external struggles," Chieffo said. L'Rell is following T'Kuvma's plan to unify the different factions of the Klingon empire, although Chieffo notes there are challenges, with certain male Klingons who don't appreciate having a woman in power. "We're trying to piece it back together," said Mary Chieffo, who plays the Klingon leader. L'Rell may have had limited screen time in the first season, but she starts things off with a huge role: head of the Klingon High Council. "The clues for how that happens can be found in that," Cruz said. Rapp referred to it as "nature's recycler." "We deal with the consequences."Īs for how he returns? Rapp and Cruz hint that the mycelial network, which played a role in how quickly Discovery could move from place to place, would be a major factor. "We don't gloss over what happened last season," said Wilson Cruz, who plays Culber. We find Culber at the beginning of the second season the way we left him - dead. That grief will fuel a drive to save Culber, who has confirmed he will be resurrected. "Stamets is peering into the abyss of the unknown of the space left in the wake of the death of Culber," said Anthony Rapp, who plays Stamets. Hugh Culber, who shockingly died midway through last season. Stamets gets a chance to grieve for the loss of his partner, Dr. Will she get a chance to kick some more butt? It's Michelle Yeoh, so one can only hope. Early trailers showed she would be back, acting the part of the original Georgiou in front of Pike, which should lead to some entertaining moments. She brought an element of candor and attitude to the final stretch of the last season, and will likely do so again. Michelle Yeoh brings a natural gravitas to Discovery.
